Starsky is Driving. Hutch is Turned On.

Little details, lines of dialogue, and whole scenes get lost in the journey from script to finished episode. We pour over the script for Gillian, discuss the changes, and act out the missing scenes. Listen and be shocked by how much worse some of the dialogue was in the script! And then be delighted by some suggestive screen direction!

We are now on iTunes and Stitcher!

Episode Notes:

This was our favorite screen direction from the Gillian script.

  1. Listening to the cut dialogue, (good job, too) it struck me how much the Gillian who is pointing out how much she earns, how expensive her furniture is and defending her desire for nicer things sounds a lot like fan written versions of Vanessa. Is per-realization Hutch one of those people who mentally and emotionally go blind when they decide they’ve fallen in love? Is he trying to save them or subconsciously justify his own mistaken idealizations?

    1. Good point! Maybe episode-Gillian was similar to Marianne Owens, but script-Gillian seems similar to Vanessa — or, as you point out, fanon Vanessa. I think it’s totally possible that Hutch idealizes his love interests until the love-blindness wears off.

      1. I think the same could have been said of the man himself. Thank God he found Helen! Love this! Marianne Ewing

  2. Hey Funny banter & insight. Wish I had friendships like you 3. I wish you’d mentioned the full on sorrow of Hutch’s reaction & the way he lays his head on her chest. People who did not know they were ex’s probably were shocked at such physical contact in the ’70’s. I will be enjoying your pod casts for a long time I think! love,Marianne Ewing

    1. Again, sorry for getting back to you so late. We’re on an unofficial hiatus due to life getting a bit hectic. But I’m so flattered that you enjoy our banter, insight, and friendship.

We totally could have talked more about David’s acting in that scene, yes! He really knocked that scene out of the park. As one Hutch fan to another, what’s your favorite episode? I have a hard time picking a favorite, but Survival, Vendetta, Shootout, and Fatal Charm might be my top four.

      1. Hello Friends, found myself back here again-need the company, tho I am happily married I sure like to hear different voices, especially yours. I picture all 3 of you deciding to get together after 3 weeks isolation & hugging while laughing & crying at the strange world we seem to be in. I never answered your ? about which ep I liked best so here goes-The Fix & the ep with Kyra. Seems most fans take the show 2 seriously.I hope you are all ok

        1. Thank you — I hope you’re staying safe, too! It really is a strange time we find ourselves in. It’s even stranger because up until a few months ago, I was living with Jen, but she’s back in New Jersey now. Rachel and I are both in Wisconsin, but yes, in separate households. I look forward to hanging out with her when this is over, but the three of us do Skype. Thank goodness for Skype! I live by myself and it’s pretty lonely. Who are you most looking forward to hugging when this is all over?

I love The Fix, too! Though I find myself wanting to fast-forward through several of the scenes to get to the best parts. Starsky vs Hutch is an unusual choice for a favorite episode, I think! What do you like about it? (No judgement, of course! In fact I just finished making a fanvid that uses clips almost exclusively from that episode.)
